Tash-Hauli Complex

Tash-Hauli Palatial Complex in Khiva (Uzbekistan), the main palace of Khiva Khans.

CONSTRUCTION OF TASH-HAULI

The palace situated in east part of Khiva and was build by Allah Kuli Khan. The construction took about 8 years, from 1830 to 1838. First it was finished residential settlement of harem, after guesthouse – place for formal receptions, and the last was – “arzhona”, courtroom. One  historian wrote that best man of that period were penalized and killed just because they refused to finish the building in 2 years. It took 8 years to finish to Usto Kalandar Khivagi.

tash hauliIn south part of harem in Tash-Hauli build small ayvans, 4 of them were for wives of Khan (according to law man could have no more then 4 wives), 5th of ayvans, wealthy decorated was living room for Khan. In each ayvan, there are rooms for servants. Harem in Tash-Hauliequipped in accordance with traditions of Khorezm regarding design of woman’s part (Ichan Hauli).

Some of details of defensive stronghold consist in design of palace, which conforms to solitary life style of inhabitants of harem. After harem was build guesthouse (Ishrat Hauli). Quadratic yard with round eminence for yurt, fully built up with rooms and ayvans.

South ayvan was for ceremonies and acceptance of delegates. The ayvan of guesthouse decorated with majolica with light ornaments on the ceiling and small towers on the sides, similar in interior with theatre, with full of magnificence. Arzhona (courtroom) situated in south-west part of Tash-Hauli. It is 2 times bigger then guesthouse. Courtroom decorated with majolica like guesthouse. All decorations were done by famous master Abdullah, by nickname Genius. This master decorated all palaces of Tash-Hauli.

RULER

The period of ruling by Allah Kuli Khan can be characterized by strong power of Khan, successful international policy and with progress in trades with Russia. As result of it, it becomes possible to decorate buildings in rich manner. The palace of Allah Kuli Khan is the most outstanding architectural object of XIX century. Small reconstruction works didn’t affect uniqueness of palace, and it can be truly considered as a museum of architectural style of Khiva of that period.  Dimensions: total 80×80; harem 80×42, yard of harem; 49×15; guesthouse 43×36.5; courtroom 35x40m.
